This process reduces the time to mobilize and avoids or minimizes disposal and transportation costs. Soil processing is at times an unavoidable element of land remediation and can involve soil washing, solidification, stabilization, soil metals fixation, bioremediation, and screening.
Metals stabilization/fixation is achieved by mixing proprietary treatment chemistries with soil contaminated with various heavy metals for especially rapid fixation of the contaminants (within hours). For most heavy metals, regulating the pH of the environment is the key to controlling leach ability. For example, lead leaches on a bell curve, at both high and low pH. So in order to minimize leaching, the treatment additive should not drive up the pH too quickly or too high. ELI uses products that never bring the pH to a dangerous level. We are able to increase treatment efficiency by controlling pH accordingly. In addition, phosphates and other additive chemicals bind to the metals in question, forming compounds that have extremely low solubility and making the treatment essentially permanent (unlike lime).
Bioremediation is defined as use of biological processes to degrade, break down, transform, and/or essentially remove contaminants or impairments of quality from soil and water. Bioremediation is a natural process which relies on bacteria, fungi, and plants to alter contaminants as these organisms carry out their normal life functions. Metabolic processes of these organisms are capable of using chemical contaminants as an energy source, rendering the contaminants harmless or less toxic products in most cases.
Neutralization is a chemical process used on corrosive hazardous waste to reduce the level of a waste’s corrosively. The neutralization procedure involves adjusting the pH level of the corrosive waste (with no other hazardous characteristics) to a pH between 5.5 and 9.5. The purpose is to alter the corrosive characteristic of the waste so that it no longer is hazardous and can be disposed of or treated as nonhazardous.
